Figurative Artwork

Longhofer’s figurative work ranges from narrative and conceptual paintings, drawings and sculpture. Michael’s diverse subject matter takes a fresh new look at how cultural stereotypes and human beings are perceived. In Longhofer’s Inversion series, he breaks the rules of Gestalt Theory, by playing around with the Figure/ Ground relationship.

“By combining the image of the human figure with different types of visual manipulations, I investigate how intimately the figure and the ground can be intertwined. For the purpose of conceptually exploring the human existence and its surroundings, I manipulate the figure-ground organization. I immerse the human being into an environment using technology and demonstrate how the human figure participates with the background or another object. My investigation of a figure-ground inversion in painting brings together traditional painting methods with a new process to show the tensions between focus and ground, object and subject, humanity and nature.” Longhofer, Inversion, M.F.A.

Death of the West painting by Michael Longhofer

Death of the West

“I create fictional paintings with characters that have a regional connection with certain local areas, these places are the backdrops where the scenes task place. I’ve always used my surroundings as inspiration for my work. In the work, there are layers of humor, sarcasm, and cultural stereotypes. Talk about the message. The message is up to the audience.” Longhofer, Rambling Narratives, M.F.A.
